ANN ARBOR, MI – Led by University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, a handful of Michigan universities made a ranking of the world’s best.
The World University Rankings 2023 by Times Higher Education measures universities with a methodology weighing teaching performance, research quality and number of citations, international focus and how university’s collaborate with industries on innovation.
Among 1,799 universities ranked, UM-Ann Arbor ranked No. 23 in the world and third among public universities in the United States. University of Oxford in England ranked first overall, while Harvard University ranked second internationally and first in the U.S.
UM’s score was bolstered most by how often research produced from the university was cited by other studies.
UM President Santa Ono informed the university community of the ranking in a series of social media posts.
“University of Michigan ranked the No. 3 public university in the U.S., No. 14 in North America and No. 23 in the world,” he wrote.
Michigan State University ranked just outside the top-100 in the world at No. 106 overall, with research citations pushing up its score.
Wayne State University is next in the state, ranked between No. 501-600. UM, MSU and Wayne State collaborate in the University Research Corridor, which contributed more than $20 billion to the Michigan’s economy in fiscal year 2021 per the organization.
Oakland University is ranked between No. 1,001-1,200. Both Grand Valley State and Western Michigan University round out the Michigan universities in the rankings at No. 1,201-1,500.
