SANTA FE – Beginning today, Sept. 15, the Public Education Department will publish daily case updates regarding the number of positive school-related COVID-19 cases in New Mexico.

New cases will be reported for the prior 24-hour period. The first daily case update marks one week from the start of hybrid learning in some districts.

The Public Education Department announced today five new positive cases of COVID-19, confirmed on Monday, Sept 14, after implementing a rapid response and verifying all pertinent information with the school(s) and school district(s).

The following new cases were reported:

• One case at a public school in Chavez County. The infected individual is a student. The infected student was last in the school building Friday, Sept. 11. All staff members and the parents and guardians of all students in the affected school have been notified of the positive case.
• One case at a public school in Bernalillo County. The infected individual is a staff member. The infected individual was last in the school building on August 28, 2020. All staff members and the parents and guardians of all students in the affected school have been notified of the positive case.
• One case at a public school in Colfax County. The infected individual is a student. The infected student was last in the school building Sept. 14. All staff members and the parents and guardians of all students in the affected school have been notified of the positive case.
• One case at a public school in Santa Fe County. The infected staff member was last in the school building Sept. 4. All staff members and the parents and guardians of all students in the affected school have been notified of the positive case.
• One additional case at a public school in Santa Fe County.  The individual was not on campus when they contracted COVID-19 and no one in the school environment was potentially exposed.

The affected classrooms and school facilities will be thoroughly disinfected, and any staff or students who came into close contact with a newly diagnosed individual will be quarantined for 14 days. “Close contact” means being within six feet for three minutes or more.

Staff who were close contacts must get tested for COVID-19 and provide the school with test results prior to returning to in-person duties.

The PED has collected data since Aug. 17; moving forward, cumulative totals will include those data, and the total number of cases in school populations is now at 108.
